What a maid or matron of honor is actually expected to do

Being asked to be maid of honor comes with a title but rarely a job description, which leaves a lot of people guessing at what's expected of them until they're already deep into planning a shower they didn't realize was theirs to organize.

What usually falls to the role

  • Helping organize the bridal shower and bachelorette party, often alongside the rest of the bridal party
  • Being a primary point of contact for other bridesmaids on logistics
  • Holding the bouquet and helping with the dress during the ceremony
  • Giving a speech at the reception
  • Emotional support throughout the engagement, which is often the least visible but most valued part of the role

What's not automatically their job

Paying for the shower or bachelorette entirely out of pocket, managing the couple's vendor logistics, or handling tasks that really belong to a hired coordinator. If the role is drifting into unpaid wedding-planner territory, it's worth a direct conversation about scope.

The kindest thing a couple can do

Say explicitly what you're hoping for, rather than assuming your maid of honor will intuit it from wedding culture generally. A short, direct conversation early on saves both of you from mismatched expectations later.
