Plated, buffet, or family-style: comparing wedding catering formats

Couples usually pick a menu before they've picked a format, when the format is the bigger decision. Plated, buffet, and family-style each change the cost, the timeline, and the overall feel of the reception in ways that are worth weighing before you get attached to specific dishes.

Plated service

The most formal option, and usually the most expensive per head because of the staffing it requires. It moves guests through dinner on a predictable schedule, which matters if your reception has a tight run of speeches and dances planned around it.

Buffet

Generally the most budget-friendly option and gives guests the most choice, but it takes longer to move a full room through the line, and it can feel less formal than some couples want for an evening reception.

Family-style

Sits between the two: shared platters at each table keep the sit-down feel of plated service while giving guests some choice over portions, and it tends to encourage more table conversation than either alternative. It costs more than a buffet but less than fully plated service in most cases.

What actually decides it

Guest count is the biggest factor. Plated service at 200 guests needs a large serving staff and a tight kitchen timeline; the same format at 60 guests is far more manageable. Match the format to your headcount before you fall in love with a specific menu.
