What to rent versus buy for your wedding décor, and where the math favors buying

Renting gets recommended as the default money-saving move for wedding decor, and for most categories, it is. But for a specific handful of items, buying (often secondhand, then reselling afterward in the large resale market for wedding decor) can come out cheaper, or at least break even.

Usually cheaper to rent

Linens, chairs, large arch or backdrop structures, and anything requiring storage space or specialist transport. These have high volume-to-value ratios that make owning them, even briefly, impractical for a one-time event.

Sometimes cheaper to buy

Vases and small vessels, candle holders, and simple decorative frames or signage boards are often available secondhand from other couples' post-wedding resale listings for a fraction of rental cost, and can be resold the same way afterward, sometimes recovering most of the original cost.

The resale market is worth checking before either decision

Dedicated wedding decor resale groups and marketplaces exist specifically for this, and checking them before committing to a rental or a new purchase, for either buying used or planning your own resale afterward, is worth the twenty minutes it takes.
