Custom versus off-the-rack suits for the groom: what the price difference buys

The gap between a cheap ill-fitting suit and an expensive custom one is huge. The gap between a well-altered off-the-rack suit and a fully custom one is much smaller than the price difference suggests, and it's worth understanding where that money goes.

What custom buys you

  • Fabric and cut chosen specifically, rather than picked from limited stock sizes
  • A fit built around your exact measurements from the start, not adjusted after the fact
  • More flexibility for an unusual build that off-the-rack sizing doesn't serve well

What a good tailor gets you with off-the-rack

A skilled tailor can adjust shoulders, sleeve length, waist, and trouser break to fit dramatically better than the suit did off the shelf. For most standard builds, a well-altered off-the-rack suit at a fraction of custom pricing is genuinely close in the final look.

Where custom is worth it

A significantly non-standard build (very tall, very broad, an unusual proportion between chest and waist) where off-the-rack simply doesn't have a size that alterations can fully fix. In that case, custom stops being a luxury and starts being the more practical option.
