When it's worth it

• You're staying five or more nights in one place, long enough to notice extra square footage
• The suite includes something you'd otherwise pay for separately, a private pool, breakfast, airport transfers
• It's a milestone stay you're unlikely to repeat, and the price difference is small relative to the whole trip

When a standard room does the same job

For a one or two night stopover, or a resort where you'll spend most of your waking hours by the pool or out exploring, extra room square footage barely gets used. Put that money toward an excursion or a nicer dinner instead.
