The travel insurance details that actually matter for a honeymoon, and the ones that don't

Travel insurance gets bought reflexively and read closely almost never, which is fine for most trips and a bad habit for one that often involves your single largest annual travel spend.

Cancellation cover, specifically for wedding-related reasons

Standard travel insurance often doesn't automatically cover trip cancellation if the wedding itself is postponed or cancelled, since that's technically a different event from the honeymoon booking. Some insurers offer this as an add-on, worth asking about directly if your honeymoon is booked separately and well in advance of the wedding.

Medical cover limits for your actual destination

A generic policy's medical cover limit can be genuinely inadequate for destinations with expensive private healthcare (the United States is the standout example), where a single hospital visit can run into tens of thousands. Check the limit specifically against your destination, not just that a limit exists.

Adventure activity riders

Standard policies frequently exclude scuba diving below a certain depth, skiing off-piste, and other activities that sound like normal honeymoon adventure but technically fall outside base cover. If any of these are on the itinerary, check explicitly rather than assuming they're included.

What doesn't matter much

Baggage cover beyond a modest amount, and gadget cover if you already have it through a separate policy or a credit card benefit, are the two most commonly oversold add-ons. They're rarely where honeymoon insurance claims happen.
