What to do when your honeymoon overlaps with a family trip, whether you planned it that way or not

For some couples, particularly those getting married far from home or with family scattered internationally, the honeymoon and a family gathering make sense to combine. For others, this happens by accident when a parent or sibling decides to "just happen to be in the area" during the trip meant to be just the two of you.

If you're combining them on purpose

Build in a clearly separated second leg that's genuinely just the two of you, even if it's only three or four days at the end. A trip that's family time the entire way through, however lovely, isn't really a honeymoon, it's a family holiday that happened after a wedding.

If someone invites themselves

This is a conversation worth having directly and early, not one to let slide out of politeness. "We're really looking forward to this being just us, we'd love to see you properly once we're back" is a complete, kind, and firm response, and it's a far easier conversation to have before flights are booked than after.

The middle ground some couples land on

A short overlap (a shared dinner, a day trip together) followed by a clean split into separate itineraries lets you see family without the whole trip becoming a family trip. It requires being explicit about the schedule in advance, which feels awkward to lay out but avoids a much more awkward conversation on day three of the actual trip.
