Wedding dress preservation: what's worth doing and what's a waste of money

A wedding dress spends one day being worn and, for a lot of people, decades afterward sitting in storage, hopefully in good enough condition to pass down or simply look back on. Preservation is worth doing, but not every service on offer is worth paying for.

Clean it quickly

Stains that seem invisible on the day, sugar from champagne, oil from dinner, can oxidize and become visible months later if the dress isn't cleaned promptly. Get it cleaned within a few weeks of the wedding, not whenever you eventually get around to it.

What a real preservation service does

• A specialized cleaning process suited to delicate fabrics and beading, not standard dry cleaning
• Acid-free tissue paper used to pad folds, preventing permanent creasing
• A breathable storage box, not sealed plastic, which traps moisture and can cause yellowing

What's often an unnecessary upsell

A sealed, vacuum-style preservation box that can't be opened without breaking the seal sounds premium but makes it impossible to check on the dress over the years, and some fabrics need occasional airing rather than a permanent seal. A good preservationist will explain the trade-off rather than just selling you the most expensive option.
